Liverpool will look for a triumph away to Bayern Munich when the teams meet for the return leg of their UEFA Champions League last 16 tie, set for the Allianz Arena on Wednesday, 13 March 2019, kick-off at 22h00 CAT.
A scoreless first leg at Anfield means all three games between the clubs on Merseyside have finished 0-0. Bayern are in fine form at home form against English clubs – they have won the last four matches in succession – while Liverpool have suffered four consecutive away defeats in the Champions League.
Bayern have not lost at the last 16 stage since going out on away goals at the hands of Internazionale in 2010/11. The German giants’ record in two-legged ties against English clubs is W10 L5; they have won the last five on the bounce, since going down 6-5 on aggregate to Chelsea in the 2004/05 quarterfinals.
The Bavarians have won all but two of the 23 UEFA ties in which they drew the first leg away from home, the exceptions being ties against Liverpool in 1980/81 and AC Milan in 2006/07.
Liverpool are unbeaten in their last seven Champions League round of 16 matches (W5 D2) and have not conceded a goal since a 1-0 loss at home to Barcelona in the 2006/07 second leg (which they still won on away goals thanks to a 2-1 victory in Spain).
The Reds’ most recent matches against Bundesliga opponents brought away (2-1) and home (4-2) victories against Hoffenheim in last season’s play-offs. That made the Merseyside club’s record in two-legged ties against German clubs W14 L2.
The English side is unbeaten in their last four games in Germany (W2 D2), where their record overall is W3 D9 L5.
Liverpool have won three and lost four of the UEFA competition ties in which they have drawn the home first leg, most recently against Chelsea in the 2007/08 Champions League semifinals.
