Chelsea will be aiming to continue their march up the 2020-21 English Premier League standings when they host Newcastle United at Stamford Bridge on Monday evening.
The Blues are unbeaten in the league since Thomas Tuchel took over the reins as head coach and registered a third straight win by defeating Sheffield United 2-1 away last weekend.
Tuchel was impressed by Timo Werner’s performance at Bramall Lane and despite failing to get his name on the scoresheet, the German forward set up both goals to move the London club up to fifth and a point behind the Uefa Champions League spots.
“When he plays like this we are very happy,” said Tuchel. “This was a big step forward. The first goal was an amazing run and amazing assist. The goals will come.”
Newcastle have also been on the up of late and claimed a second win in three matches with a thrilling 3-2 victory over Southampton last time out. The result eased their relegation fears and Steve Bruce was delighted with his team’s ability to hold onto all three points despite playing most of the second-half with 10-men.
“The last half hour is awful to be brutally honest,” Bruce said. “But the blocks they got in, the challenges they made, I couldn’t be more pleased. They have hung on very well.
“The resilience of the team and the effort and commitment was terrific.”
An own goal from Federico Fernandez and a second-half strike from Tammy Abraham led Chelsea to a 2-0 win over their hosts at St James’ Park earlier this season.
