Chelsea are already assured of the English Premier League title but Sunday’s home game against Liverpool is still significant as the visitors attempt to close the gap on the top four.

Chelsea wrapped up the Premier League title with a 1-0 home win over Crystal Palace last weekend. They have spent the bulk of the season at the top of the standings with only Manchester City briefly threatening to spoil the party earlier this year. Although Chelsea can relax to some degree, they will want to remain unbeaten in the league at Stamford Bridge where only Manchester City, Burnley and Southampton have avoided defeat in the current campaign. Chelsea are unbeaten in their last 15 league games with their last defeat coming at Spurs on New Years Day.

Liverpool still have an outside chance of catching fourth placed Manchester United and qualifying for Champions League football next season. To do so they will need to bridge the gap to United which stood at four points heading into the weekend but could have increased if United get a positive result at Crystal Palace a day before this game takes place. Liverpool did beat QPR at Anfield last weekend but they have not been in the best of form of late and recent results away from home comprise of a 4-1 defeat at Arsenal, 0-0 draw at West Brom and a 1-0 loss at Hull City.

Summary:
Liverpool now have more riding on this than Chelsea but they will have to step up on recent performances if they are to take anything from the game. We can expect Chelsea to remain professional in their approach even though the title has already been clinched but Liverpool are our fancy to either draw or win.
