Liverpool’s Premier League title hopes will be put to the test in the Merseyside side derby against Everton at Goodison Park on Sunday, 3 March 2019, kick-off at 18h15 CAT.
After a string of underwhelming performances and questions as to whether Liverpool had the stamina to go all the way, Jurgen Klopp’s men put in a five-star showing to thrash Watford 5-0 at home on Wednesday night.
Sadio Mane, Virgil van Dijk (two apiece) and Divock Origi shared the goals as the Reds maintained their one-point lead at the top of the table over rivals Manchester City (who picked up a far less impressive 1-0 win over West Ham United, in which Pep Guardiola’s side looked to be short of energy and inspiration).
Liverpool may feel the momentum has shifted back in their direction, but this weekend offers a stiff test. They are likely to head to Goodison in second place (as Man City can assume top spot when they play on Saturday) and Everton shrugged off their recent struggles in impressive style, thrashing Cardiff City 3-0 away on Tuesday night.
Gylfi Sigurdsson scored twice as the Toffees ended a three-game losing streak in a most emphatic manner. Manager Marco Silva remains under pressure, but the midweek performance bought some good will heading into the derby.
In head-to-head terms, Everton and Liverpool have clashed in 53 Premier League matches. The Reds have claimed 23 wins compared to nine for the Toffees, while 21 games have been drawn.
The teams’ most recent meeting was a Premier League clash at Anfield in December 2018 which Liverpool won 1-0, thanks to a last-gasp goal from Divock Origi. The Reds are unbeaten in their last 18 matches against their rivals in all competitions, a run which dates back to the Toffees’ last win in the rivalry in October 2010.
