Juve, Real renew rivalry in Champions League quarterfinals

Juventus and Real Madrid will renew their rivalry in the UEFA Champions League when they meet in the first leg of their quarterfinal, set for the Allianz Stadium in Turin on Tuesday, 3 April 2018, kick-off at 20h45 CAT.

The teams have been regular combatants in Europe in recent years, with their most notable meeting coming in the final of last season’s Champions League: Real claimed an emphatic 4-1 triumph at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff.

Overall, the teams have crossed swords 19 times – the Spanish giants have claimed nine wins compared to eight for their Italian counterparts, while just two games have been drawn. The clubs have each netted 22 times in the rivalry.

Juve comes into the game having eliminated Tottenham Hotspur in the last 16. Max Allegri’s side was held 2-2 in Turin in the first leg, but they showed their tactical nous in the return game in London, where a quick salvo of two goals from Gonzalo Higuain and Paulo Dybala secured a 2-1 victory and progression from a tie in which they were mostly outplayed.

Real enjoyed a more emphatic triumph over Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain. ‘Los Blancos’ won 3-1 in Madrid in the first game and added to their advantage in the return by triumphing 2-1 in the French capital, for an overall 5-2 aggregate win.

Cristiano Ronaldo

One of the big questions heading into this clash is whether Real’s Cristiano Ronaldo can continue his incredible run of scoring in the Champions League.

The Portuguese attacker has scored in each of Madrid’s last nine consecutive matches in the competition (for a tally of 14 goals in the sequence) and the hot streak started with a brace in last year’s final against Juve.
