Round 23 of the 2017/18 Premier League season saw Manchester City’s unbeaten run finally come to an end, while Arsenal continues to drop off the pace in the battle for the top four.
City was outplayed by Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday, with the hosts scoring through Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah to record a famous 4-3 victory.
City made things nervous for Jurgen Klopp’s side with a couple of late goals, but ultimately it was a superb and deserved win for Liverpool, who have leapfrogged Chelsea into third place.
The Blues were held 0-0 at home by Leicester City, with Antonio Conte’s side putting in another laboured showing. There was no such complaint of Tottenham Hotspur, who thrashed Everton 4-0 in a match which saw Harry Kane become the club’s leading scorer in the Premier League.
West Ham United continued their resurgence under David Moyes with a 4-1 away win at Huddersfield Town, ditto for Crystal Palace thanks to a 1-0 home win over Burnley, while Arsenal lurched to another disappointment after they were beaten 2-1 at Bournemouth on Sunday.
In addition to finding themselves a full eight points off the top four, the Gunners have also been dealt a blow with the news that Alexis Sanchez is set to leave the club for either Manchester United or Chelsea this week.
As for United, they cut the gap to City to 12 points with a 3-0 home win over Stoke City on Monday night. The Red Devils are highly unlikely to haul in their ‘noisy neighbours’, but can at least take comfort from holding second place with some strength.
