All eyes will be on Old Trafford for Sunday’s Manchester derby between United and City and coming into the game, it’s United who are in the better form.

After last weekend’s round of fixtures United boasted an eight point cushion over fifth placed Liverpool and with just seven league games remaining, they look set to deliver on the absolute minimum requirement of a top four finish and a return to Champions League football next season. Bridging an eight point gap of their own to league leaders Chelsea is another matter entirely, especially as Chelsea have played one game fewer, but United are due to visit Stamford Bridge next weekend. Since losing at home to Swansea on the opening weekend of the campaign United have lost just one other Premier League fixture in front of their own supporters. That defeat came against Southampton in early November whilst Chelsea, who drew 1-1 here in late October, are the only other side to have taken any league points from a visit to Old Trafford this season.
Manchester City

Manchester City had looked like the biggest dangers to league leaders Chelsea nearly all season but after a 2-1 defeat at Crystal Palace on Monday night they find themselves in fourth spot. City’s hopes of retaining the title are looking increasingly remote and they will kick off here anything between 9 and 12 points behind Chelsea who visit QPR earlier on Sunday. City are really struggling away from home and they have lost their last three Premier League road trips in addition to a Champions League fixture at Barcelona. City now face the prospect of not only finishing the season without a major trophy but also playing catch up with their rivals, Manchester United.

Summary:
City could well be vulnerable after some indifferent results away from home but although their title chances have almost disappeared, the “local derby” factor here also has to be taken into consideration. Although United are in better shape and neither side is in the habit of drawing matches this could be tight and the neutrals amongst us might well benefit from backing the draw.
